"Spanish is my Superpower!"

"Sesame Street Tackles Prejudice Faced by Spanish Speakers in U.S."

Gracias, Sesame Street, for addressing a very common issue. I work with families nearly every day whose children learned Spanish in the home at an early age. Sadly, by the time they are in high school and beyond, many of these youth are no longer bilingual because during their school years, they were either discouraged or embarrassed to speak Spanish. Those who have been born into a bilingual family are gifted, not shamed. Our country stands to benefit from citizens who can navigate the complexities of diverse cultures and languages! Let us not forget how this rich cultural diversity has shaped the history and values of the United States. Let us embrace our differences as we stand united. (And in case you were wondering, the United States does not have an "official language"!)
